Call your best friend and tell them the news! 5 years ago Volume 1 of Female Flow dropped and changed the level of attention that folks were giving indie female artists. From Nikki Grier to Tina B (now Tina World Order) there is some fire on this one that still bumps – FIVE YEARS LATER. Since then many have tried to follow suit but no one did it like us. Despite the pause we haven’t left, we haven’t stopped supporting the ladies on the mic, on the stages or behind the boards – just check our Instagram!

From VP Records out of FL and Jamaica is Etana latest video “I Rise” directed by Scorpio21. She chose the name Etana, which means ‘the strong one’ in Swahili; her strength was manifested, this time around, by pursuing a musical career strictly on her own terms. Etana’s elegantly modest Rasta-chic sartorial style is as distinctive as her sound: an audacious fusion of folk, soul, jazz and reggae supporting a powerful vocal range suggestive of the ancestral spirit of South Africa’s Miriam Makeba, the regality of reggae queen Marcia Griffiths and the soulful verve of Etta James. “I looked at how women were being represented in (Jamaican) music and how little girls think that is the way it is supposed to be, and I wanted to be a positive influence and change some of the things they are taught,” Etana reflected. Etana has also been an advocate and activist for impoverished children in Jamaica and battered girls through her charity organization the “JUST ONE FOUNDATION”. Etana has been actively offering her services and time to various charity organizations in Jamaica, raising funds toward alleviating the problem of poverty in Jamaican garrison communities. A true ambassador for Reggae music and female in the music industry, she is relentless in spreading her message of “unconditional love” through positive music with the hope of uplifting her audience from any situation that render them weak or hopeless. Prepare yourself for the Etana Experience!
I just heard this Australian singer/songwriter via our StackorStarve Instagram while doing some social promotions. At Female Flow we give everyone a chance (a listen) which is one of the codes we work by. You just never know who you will find while exploring online. From the looks of her online presence she is just getting started with her music but her single, “Love & Psycho” which is available for download on iTunes is a pop track about mixing her relationship. Love can make you a little crazy, right? Mel Smith has been writing since she was as young as 11 years old as well as tackling some covers and we look forward to hearing her original material. Check her out and let us know what you think? @FemaleFlowMusic & follow her on Facebook!
After dropping her single “Let N!gg@z Know”, Brooklyn’s Sonja Blade returns with another hot track titled “Goin’ Nowhere” produced by Skyz Muzik – listen to the latest from Sonja Blade now… and let us know what you think. Hit us up @femaleflowmusic on twitter!

I went to a private invite party for Ms. Raye 6’s birthday party and her friend Instagram’d this which sums up so much about her.
“Women are going to form a chain, a greater sisterhood than the world has ever known!” Sisterhood is real!! —
Raye6 is explosive, mysterious and can be down right demanding, but she deserves it. (in our mind at least) She recently went to the UK for a mini tour and recording session… which was a personal present from a dear loved one which we thought was super special and she is about to drop the body of work titled , “Journey to Lifted Sand”. A UK blogger stated, “The fourth performance of the night, was from an amazing young woman, with an incredible and powerful voice that blew the audience away, if you havent guessed by now.. I’m talking about the wonderful Raye 6. Coming all the way from the US of A, Raye 6 put on a great show, that had the audience woo’ing and ooh’ing. Raye 6 bought a different type of energetic vibe to the show that intrigued the audience. Her voice as well as her style was very unique and had many people asking questions such as ‘Who is she?’ and ‘Why have I not heard of her before?’.”
What they call experimental R&B you will find a gem of a singer out of LA named Kelala who recently was featured on billboard.com. Her music career kicked off when Solange booked her as an opening act on her latest tour. Currently under the Fade to Mind label she was recently asked by billboard.com,
What did you think when Solange asked you to be on Saint Heron?
“I thought it was great, wonderful, amazing. I really do like Solange, sincerely. I’m down for her and I trust her judgment. It’s awesome to be included and I know and appreciate the contributions of the other artists. It’s nice to be presented to the world in that context, especially because it does spill over into the non-indie contexts of R&B and urban music, which matters to me.”
The lastest video directed by Jude MC featuring Kelala along with labelmate Kingdom on “Bankhead” which has a very intergalactic and earthy feel. We look forward to catching up with her at a show to experience just what everyone is talking about but in the meantime check out Kelela’s “Cut 4 Me” mixtape on Soundcloud.
Jersey City, NJ has tons of talent from decades to present day and one that stands out is J Sass! She is relentless, fun, spunky, consistent and of course sassy. We have followed Sass to shows and had her perform on Salute the Queens events as well. This new track is her flowing over a dope bassed out beat that will rock your speakers… “if you ain’t moving, get the eff out the way!”
